Toxic Kitsap Galleries

Submarine Cutups : These photos are of submarine scraps that are the being disposed of through NPSSRP (Nuclear Powered Ship and Submarine Recycling Program) at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, Bremerton, WA. I took them from across the street at the south entrance of town known as the Gateway to Bremerton. The process is very toxic. This appears to be a hazardous waste disposal yard.

BREMERTON

As the blocks surrounding downtown continue renovation, a city symbol just off the Bremerton ferry terminal is going to get a facelift as well.

Following suggestions from U.S. Rep. Norm Dicks and Bremerton Mayor Cary Bozeman, the Navy has agreed to paint and refurbish historic Building 460 at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard.

BREMERTON — It’s amazing what 2,600 gallons of paint can do.

Workers hoisted high in cherry pickers are turning Puget Sound Naval Shipyard’s dingy Building 460 a creamy yellow and sky blue. It’s no small task.

The five-story structure, built in 1941 and used to repair and upgrade battleships during World War II, is the size of six football fields. It offers 426,000 square feet of work space for the shipyard’s shipfitters, welders and apprentice school.

Shipyard's Landmark Paint Job Coming Along

BREMERTON —

Puget Sound Naval Shipyard’s monstrous Building 460 used to stick out like a sore thumb on the Bremerton waterfront. Freshly painted, the five-story, 426,000-square-foot shop now gives those arriving by ferry a brighter impression of the area’s largest employer.

The $2 million paint job is half complete, including the highly visible east side that proclaims in huge gold letters “Puget Sound Naval Shipyard Building On A Proud Tradition.”

Cherokee General Corporation of Portland, Ore., began the project in April and expects to finish in early fall. It will apply 2,600 gallons of paint to the home of the shipyard’s shipfitters, welders and apprentice school. The paint will cover 178,000 square feet of surface area and match the building’s original 1941 colors.
